Walk Over Shoe
Appearing in
Painting
June/July,1993
T
hough named after the print, this design was inspired by the wire shoe. Challenged to create a unique way to display the shoe, the ribbon and rose stand was conceived. Before it was painted, however, I stumbled onto the print, and the concept gelled.
The colors used in the room in which I wish to display the print and the shoe require that pinks and violets be more predominate. The print had stronger tones of reds and avocado greens. After spraying the print with Krylon Matt #1311, I rubbed Dioxazine Purple (oil paint) over the print with a soft cloth, applying more color in the darker areas of the print. The purple toned down the brighter colors and seemed to age the print somewhat. After the oil paint had cured (about 6 weeks), the picture was matted and framed.
The roses painted on the stand take on their hue after the color of the roses shown in the dress. The ribbon echoes the soft greens shown in the print. Just as it is important to repeat colors within a design to achieve balance and harmony, color must be repeated in a room from one object to another, so the eye flows and finds the area pleasing.
Whimsical objects can provide an interesting focus in your home decor. Set aside your apprehension, and accept the challenge to create and use unique combinations of your artwork and decorative items.

| Surface Preparation: |
Apply 2 or 3 coats of Accent Victorian Mauve acrylic to the surface of the stand. Let each coat cure before sanding lightly. Wipe off the dust with a tack rag. It is not necessary to sand after the last application. Trim the edges of the stand with Accent Fingerberry acrylic. Sand and tack between coats. Gold leaf the edges (see instructions). Spray mist lightly with Krylon Matt Finish #1311. Allow to dry thoroughly and transfer the design with white graphite paper.
To prepare the wire shoe, use a wire brush to clean off flecks of metal or paint. Spray the shoe with Accent Victorian Mauve acrylic. Let dry. Using a stiff bristle paint brush, paint the bow on the shoe with Accent Roseberry acrylic.

| Gold Leaf Instructions: |
| Apply gold leaf sizing. Do about 1/4 of the circumference of the board at a time. When sizing is shinny clear, it is ready to receive the gold leaf. Tear the leaf into pieces or strips. Press on gold leaf. The leaf will only stick to the area that has been prepared with the sizing, so be careful with its application. Let the leafing rest overnight and then burnish (rub off excess leafing) the leafing with a very soft brush or soft cloth. Since this puts tiny flakes of leafing in the air and all over your clothes, do not do this where you are drying other painted pieces. |
| Brush Mix Instructions: |
| The colors for this project are brush mixed. Use the paints fairly dry. If the paints are too oily, place on a piece of paper toweling. When the excess oil has soaked up, replace the paint onto the
palette. The + means to pull out a small amount of the first color listed from the paint puddle and work into the brush, then, pull out the second color listed and work into the brush, blending the paint together on your palette.
It may be necessary to repeat the procedure until you achieve the desired color on your brush. The - means to dry wipe your brush and pick up the next color listed. DO NOT RINSE YOUR BRUSH IN TURP. The ( ) means that this color is optional, but if you choose to use it, use it sparingly.
Refer to the color worksheet and written instructions for painting the roses. |

When applying a lighter or darker value on an area that has been based in with color (known as wet on wet), side load your brush with the lightest dark value given first (if more than one dark value is given). Place the dark value on the ribbon where it tucks up under a leaf or a rose. "Walk" the color out into the body of the ribbon. Wipe your brush and blend softly. Reapply the dark value (or the next dark value listed) again if necessary. Blend softly. The lights are layered on the ribbon in the same manner, beginning with the deepest light and working up to the lightest light. Wipe the brush between applications and soften.....................
